Nuffield Research Placements

Nuffield Placement Provider Badge

The Department of Archaeology is proud to be a Nuffield Research Placement Provider.

The Department’s Nuffield Research Placements are designed to provide Year 12 students hands-on practical experience and skills in archaeological science and data interpretation. Over the course of 2-weeks, successful candidates have the opportunity to undertake independent science-based research with guidance from our experienced and enthusiastic staff in the Department of Archaeology. Placement holders receive training in field and/or laboratory-based research methods, collect and analyse original data, and produce a report and a poster about their research and what they have learned during their placement.

Previous Nuffield Placement projects include:

Environmental Legacies of Durham’s Industrial Past: Soil sampling, soil magnetic and multi-element analyses, data mapping in a GIS, and historical research to investigate the long-term impacts of coal mining on the health of Durham’s soils.

If you do not meet the Nuffield eligibility criteria, please contact one of our STEM ambassadors to enquire about joining one of our research placements: Prof. Karen Milek.

The Department of Archaeology are proud to have resident STEM Ambassadors who are passionate about inspiring the next generation to explore potential careers in science, technology, or mathematics. Our STEM Ambassadors volunteer their time to provide careers talks about science and mathematics in archaeology and help schools integrate archaeology and archaeological science into their teaching.

Profiles of our STEM Ambassadors:

Professor Karen Milek (karen.b.milek@durham.ac.uk) has given careers talks to schools and provides research placements, including Nuffield Research Placements, to secondary school students in the northeast of England.
