This skill-building workshop series is geared towards postgraduate researchers and staff and centres on narrative and qualitative approaches to mapping. The workshop corresponds with a visit from colleagues from Zaporizhzhia National University in Ukraine as part of the UK–Ukraine Twinning Grant scheme. Participants will be introduced to alternative mapping techniques through a series of guest lectures, hands-on practical sessions, and a keynote.

Organisers Hanna Ruszczyk and Meghan Kelly received a subproject grant to support the ongoing collection of oral histories in eastern Ukraine. As part of this project, we proposed a two-day mapping workshop for humanities and social science researchers from both universities that focuses on narrative mapping and digital storytelling. We will explore the opportunities and limitations of varying techniques for visually expressing migration and displacement stories. The workshop will largely draw inspiration from the oral histories collected by one of the ZNU researchers, Dr. Serhii Bilivnenko. This event is hosted by Geography and IHRR.

Day 1: Monday 17 July 2023, 1–5.30pm

This will include lunch and lectures as well as coffee, tea, and snacks. Feel free to join us for lunch or just show up for the lectures. Day 1 is not hands-on.

  • Tim Cole (History at University of Bristol): Mapping History - Introducing the Geography of the Holocaust project
  • Meghan Kelly (Geography at DU): On Art and Experimentation - A framework for narrative mapping
  • ZNU History colleagues: Ukrainian context and oral histories

Day 2: Tuesday 18 July 2023, 9am–5.30pm

This will include the hands-on portion of the mapping workshop and features lectures/activities with Meghan Kelly (DU), James Cheshire (UCL), Alex Kent (Canterbury), and Tim Cole (Bristol). Additional speakers are being confirmed. Participation includes lunch. There will also be coffee, tea, and snacks to keep us going!

No mapping experience is required! Our cartography speakers will also be available to assist throughout the workshop. Day 2 is more of a time commitment, and we'd like attendees to stay for the full day (if possible).
