Eyes on Music 2018 – Workshop – Interview with Sunanda Sharma
The collaboration on ethnomusicological and audiovisual projects between Durham University's Music Department and Fondazione Cini's Intercultural Institute of Comparative Music Studies (IISMC) started in 2014 and notable outcomes of 2020 included the second edition of the "Eyes on Music" initiative, Carpitella Fellowship awarded to Petr Nuska, and the Cini/Durham Collaborative Fellowship awarded to Simone Tarsitani.
Giovanni Giuriati (Director of IISMC, Fondazione Cini, Italy) will introduce the framework of Durham/Venice collaboration, the work on IISMC's audiovisual digital archive project, and the Eyes on music initiative.
Simone Tarsitani (Technical Manager, Department of Music, Durham University) will present his plans for the forthcoming Cini/Durham Fellowship, based on existing audiovisual documentation of the IISMC archive.
Marco Lutzu (Researcher at University of Cagliari, Italy) will talk about the training programme on audiovisual production offered to young ethnomusicologists.
Petr Nuska (PhD candidate, CVAC, Durham University) will outline his plans for an ethnomusicological film as Carpitella Fellow, based on his PhD research.

Giovanni Giuriati
Full professor of ethnomusicology (University of Rome “La Sapienza”)
Giovanni Giuriati teaches ethnomusicology at the University of Rome “La Sapienza”, where he coordinates the Doctoral programme on Music and Performing Arts. He has been directing since 2004 the Intercultural Institute for Comparative Music Studies (IISMC) of the Giorgio Cini Foundation (Venice, Italy).
Dr Simone Tarsitani
Technical Manager (Durham University)
Simone Tarsitani is an ethnomusicologist and audiovisual specialist who has worked in academic teaching and research, artistic and music production contexts. He currently oversees management and development of Durham University Music Department’s specialist infrastructure for research and teaching. Since 2014 he has been collaborating as audiovisual and digital archive specialist with the Intercultural Institute of Comparative Music Studies of the Giorgio Cini Foundation (Venice, Italy).
Marco Lutzu
Research Fellow of Ethnomusicology (University of Cagliari)
Marco Lutzu earned his PhD in History and Analysis of Musical Cultures at the University of Rome “La Sapienza”. He has carried out fieldwork in Sardinia, Cuba, and Equatorial Guinea, focusing on the relationship between music and religion, improvised poetry, hip hop culture, performance analysis and audiovisual ethnomusicology.
Petr Nuska
PhD candidate (Durham University)
Petr Nuska is a visual ethnomusicologist and ethnographic filmmaker, currently based at Durham University as a PhD candidate. Since 2011, he has been involved in many projects around the world in the field of documentary and ethnographic film, educational and activist videos, and music clips for independent musicians. Petr’s PhD research involves Romani musicians in central Slovakia and examines music enculturation in this context.
