China Link Scholarship (Academic year 2022/23)

The China Link Scholarship is a pilot programme initiated by the China Scholarship Council (CSC) in order to reinforce long-term research collaboration and two-way staff/student mobility between CSC’s overseas university partners and Chinese universities.

Durham is invited to participate in the programme for the academic year 2022/23 as a selected partner and is offered 15 scholarship places. This scholarship will allow Durham students and academic staff to undertake a period of non-degree purpose study or scientific research at Chinese universities. The academic visit could be conducted by an individual or as a group of people with a mixture of both students and academic staff, and started at any time throughout the academic year 2022/23.

Eligibility

Applicants need to meet the following eligibility criteria:

  1. Citizen of a country other than the People’s Republic of China.
  2. Register as a full-time student or employed as a full academic staff at Durham by the time of application and throughout the proposed stay in China.
  3. Meet relevant academic and language requirements (if there are any) of the Chinese host university.

Study/Research Fields

All disciplines other than Chinese language study.

Duration

One to twelve months.

Funding

Successful applicants will receive a full scholarship from CSC during their stay in China, including:

  • Tuition fee (if applied)
  • Free on-campus accommodation
  • Monthly stipend of CNY 3,000
  • Comprehensive medical insurance

Travel costs including flights and quarantine (if required) will not be covered in the scholarship. Successful applicants are expected to pay for their own travel costs. Please refer to the Travel Policies section for details of quarantine requirements.

Chinese Host Institutions

  1. The host institution needs to be one of the 289 Chinese universities on this webpage: https://campuschina.org/universities/index.html
  2. Students and acadmic staff should contact interested Chinese universities directly and obtain the admission letter/invitation issued by the Chinese host university, prior to the application to the scholarship.

Application Deadline

Rolling for now, until advised by the CSC otherwise. Due to ongoing Covid influences, the CSC has NOT offered a fixed deadline for the scholarship. The CSC will process applications on an ad hoc basis for now.

Checklist for Application

Please submit the below documents to the International Office (jian.li@durham.ac.uk).

Mandatory

  1. Valid passport bio page
  2. Pre-admission letter/invitation issued by the Chinese host university
  3. Highest education diploma and transcripts
  4. Study plan or research proposal
  5. Physical Examination Form (template form provided by the CSC at a later stage)

Optional

  1. Language qualification certificate (HSK certificates, etc.)
  2. List of publications within 3 years

Working language

The working language of the proposed academic visit in China should be clarified in the pre-admission letter/invitation issued by the Chinese host university.

Current Travel Policies to China

Starting March 2022, direct flights between China and the UK have gradually begun to restart. Most Chinese cities currently require a 14-21 days’ quarantine time for international travelers on arrival, though this requirement may change through the year. Applicants are strongly advised to check UK Government’s Foreign Travel Advice page and the Chinese Embassy’s website for timely updates.
