Climate change is widely recognised as one of the greatest, and most urgent, challenges facing humankind. This challenge has been recognised internationally, and within the UK. In collaboration with the Carbon Literacy Project, this course will give you an overview of the basic science of climate change as well as an understanding of the actions required by governments, businesses and individuals in order to avoid the worst impacts of climate change and set us on a path towards a more sustainable future.

THE PROGRAMME CONSISTS OF 2 COMPONENTS:

CARBON LITERACY TRAINING

Accredited by the Manchester-based Carbon Literacy Project, you will receive live Carbon Literacy Training via webinar sessions and an official certificate on completion.

Carbon Literacy is defined as “an awareness of the carbon dioxide costs and impacts of everyday activities, and the ability and motivation to reduce emissions, on an individual, community and organisational basis.”

More than 1700 organisations across the UK and internationally have empowered their teams with the award-winning Carbon Literacy training, including the NHS, the BBC, and Manchester City Council.

By incorporating Carbon Literacy Training in this programme, we aim to equip you with a solid educational foundation and understanding of the importance of cultivating a low carbon culture, and how to action this in your day-to-day life.

SKILLS COURSES

Pagoda Projects have developed a series of skills courses set to encourage the development of the learner’s current skillset and improve their ‘work readiness’ for a post-pandemic career.

What are the skills courses?

Our courses focus on Employability, Digital Competency, Intercultural Fluency and Workplace Basics. We believe this framework will provide you with the agility needed for a global and ever-changing workplace. We’ll give you the aptitude to communicate effectively within an international work-group or team so you can tackle the job market with awareness, preparation and confidence. You’ll also have an amazing understanding of ‘digital’ for once you’ve gained employment.

As qualifications have become a significant measure in terms of employability, each course provides a certificate of completion to show in your job applications.

Why are they important?

On a survey conducted by Universities UK which asked about what’s most important for getting a job, the survey showed that ‘for both graduates of all levels and subject areas, skills and competencies came first (82.4% reported this to be a formal or important requirement), followed by relevant work experience (66.7%)’. Similarly, 87% of employers listed attitudes and aptitudes for work more important than relevant work experience, degree result and degree subject when hiring a graduate.

ELIGIBILITY CRITERIA
Open to any student who meets one of the criteria below, with the exception of undergraduate students in their final year of study.

• You are in receipt of the Durham Grant scheme.
• You come from a family who have a household income, as assessed by Student Finance England (or equivalent) below £42,875 per annum.
• You have participated in the Supported Progression Scheme or Sutton Trust Summer School at Durham University​.
• Your home address is in an area of low progression to higher education (i.e. your postcode is listed as a ‘1’ or ‘2’ in the POLAR4 column on the POLAR checking tool here). ​
• You are from a minority ethnic group.
• You are a care-leaver (at any time) or an estranged student​.
• You have declared a disability to the University.
• You have refugee status.
