A silver-coloured logo with the words 'Gender Charter' next to the title 'Athena SWAN Silver Award'

The Department of Archaeology is pleased to announce it has been granted a Silver Athena SWAN Gender Charter award.

The department received a Bronze award in 2017 and had been working toward completing the action plan developed for that award toward upgrading to a Silver award since. The Silver award recognises the change in people and culture in the department over the last five years, and our commitment to make sure no sex or gender is at a disadvantage.

The process requires presenting self-assessment of gender balance in student numbers, recruitment and performance, broken down by programme and intersected by other demographic characteristics; in staff numbers, recruitment and promotions by grade, contract type and role; evidence of an inclusive department culture and environment; and recognition of areas for improvement. The Self-Assessment Team for Silver comprised a range of staff and students, led by Andrew Millard and Cathie Draycott, who co-submitted the final application with Sarah Semple and Becky Gowland.
