Environmental Research Group
The Environmental Research Group has extensive experience investigating environmental issues and solutions through standard and novel approaches, both in the field and in the laboratory.
The group includes specialists in:
- Global biogeochemical cycles
- Catchment hydrology, water tracers and quality
- Groundwater-surface water interactions
- Soil mineralogy and chemistry
- Stable isotope biogeochemistry (CHNOS)
- Pesticide, metal and nutrient pollution
- Metal and metalloid isotope biogeochemistry (Si, Fe, Ge, Sr, and others)
- Peatland ecology and chemistry
We are a group of people with a diverse array of expertise, and hence, our collaborative nature provides a greater level of training and understanding of the environment around us. We continuously engage with local, regional and national stakeholders. Our research is strongly aligned with the following sustainable development goals (SDGs):
2 – Zero Hunger
6 – Clean Water and Sanitation
7 – Affordable and Clean Energy
11 – Sustainable Cities and Communities
12 – Responsible Consumption and Production
13 – Climate Action
14 – Life Below Water
15 – Life on Land
Members of the group also frequently collaborate with, and use the analytical facilities of, the Stable Isotope Biogeochemistry Lab and the Durham Geochemistry Centre, for geochemical and isotopic analyses of various environmental samples.
