College Life

College life is one of the key pillars of Durham University. Every Durham University student belongs to a college - a vibrant, supportive community that provides opportunities for you to gain new experiences and develop the skills to achieve more in your future life.

While every College offers excellent opportunities for their community, each college is unique and has its own distinctive character defined by its buildings, traditions and people and each offers an excellent range of facilities for study, sports, socialising and relaxing.

Stephenson is a modern, progressive and inclusive College. We are a diverse community and promote an environment where members can achieve greater than just academic success; supporting creativity, entrepreneurship and innovation. We are a relaxed community with vibrant student bodies (JCR and MCR) and our students are engaged in a wide range of activities including sports and the arts.

The three areas which underpin Stephenson College life are:

  • Community– Stephenson provides a safe place where anyone can come and participate. Whatever your interests, you will be a valued member of the College, supported in who you are and encouraged to support those around you in turn. We want you to feel at home here.
  • Opportunity – Stephenson offers a fantastic range of opportunities and every student should be able to find something that inspires them. Whether that be events, sports, societies and the arts from the JCR and MCR, student support and career skills from the College or the lectures and seminars from the University. Our focus is on making these opportunities available and accessible to all, regardless of wealth, race, age, disability, gender, sexuality, faith or anything else.
  • Values – Our ethos of Respect and values of Curiosity, Responsibility, Inclusivity, Innovation and Courage reflect everything we do.
