March 2022 - Ustinov Celebrates International Women’s Day

Ustinov Celebrates International Women’s Day with an impressive, month-long programme organised by the GCP, GCR, and College Management Team. We are excited to reintroduce our Ustinov Meets… interview series, with keynote speaker Professor Barbara Kellerman presenting on March 16th. We hope you join us!

March 2022 at Ustinov College is dedicated to #BreakingTheBias by supporting the women in our local community and our global community. The GCP, GCR, and College Management Team have put together an extensive International Women’s Day programme, highlighting the talents, achievements, and indispensability of women here at Ustinov, at Durham University, and across the world.

Our programme began with ‘Empowering Women in Academia: 2 Minute Academic Showcase’. During this event, students presented a time-limited pitch on how they would improve the experiences of women in their field. Our Assistant Principal, Dr Sarah Rosen, and former GCP scholar, Ayurshi Dutt, acted as judges and provided feedback for the excellent presentations.

The GCP and GCR will host IWD events throughout the month. Café Scientifique is hosting a panel of three women who completed degrees in STEM and went on to forge careers in other fields, Café Politique is hosting a seminar on women in protest and resistance movements, and Volunteering will lead a night walk for charity. There will also be a GCR quiz night and film night with IWD themes.

The College Management Team is also pleased to announce the return of our Ustinov Meets… interview series for IWD. We are honoured to welcome two inspirational speakers to reflect the College tagline ‘Local Community, Global Citizens.’ Our own GCR President, Emily Watson, will give a talk on the importance of representation in College leadership. Our keynote speaker for this event will be Professor Barbara Kellerman, an internationally lauded leadership expert, who will give a talk on women and leadership.
