Responsibilities

As College Principal, I have overall responsibility for leading the implementation of the University strategy within the College and work in close collaboration with the other College Officers to maximise student experience. I represent the College at the Board of Colleges and University Senate. In addition to College responsibilities, and in my capacity as Professor of Physics, I conduct advanced research in nanotechnology and spintronics.

Background

I joined Durham University as the Principal of Trevelyan College and Professor of Physics in January 2020. I graduated with a First Class Honours Degree in Physics from the University of Ilorin, Nigeria (1990). I obtained MPhil and Ph.D (Microelectronic Engineering and semiconductor Physics) degrees from the University of Cambridge, in 1993 and 1996, respectively. I was elected a Junior Research Fellow at Trinity College, the University of Cambridge in 1996.

I then worked as a Senior Research Engineer at the Data Storage Institute, Singapore in 1997, before returning to Cambridge to take up a fellowship at the Nanoscale Science Laboratory. In 2000, I was appointed as an Assistant Professor in the Department of Electrical & Computer Engineering, National University of Singapore (NUS), promoted to Associate Professor with tenure in 2006 and Full Professor in July 2012. I was the founding Master of the Ridge View Residential College at NUS.

My research focuses on the fundamental understanding and exploration of nanomagnets in the non-volatile memory technologies. I have conducted pioneering research work in the field of nanomagnetism and won many awards including being named one of the top 100 young innovators in the world by TR100, an award-winning MIT magazine on technology. In 2013, I was selected Institute of Electrical and Electronic Engineering Magnetics Society Distinguished Lecturer. I am a Fellow of the American Physical Society, Fellow of the Institute of Physics, Fellow of the Institute of Nanotechnology, and a Royal Society Wolfson Fellow.

 Responsibilities

As Assistant Principal of Trevelyan College I am responsible for overseeing the day-to-day running of student support and wellbeing in College. Background

Prior to joining Trevelyan in October 2021, I was working in Durham University Library and Collections and I have been connected to the University since completing a MA in Modern History here in 2015. I have a PhD in Historical Geography. My thesis explored the intersection of race, class and politics in the North East of England in the interwar period.
