Congratulations and Welcome to New Undergraduate Students

Welcome from the Principal

Congratulations on obtaining a place at Durham University and at Trevelyan College. This is an achievement of which you should be extremely proud.

I am looking forward to welcoming you to Trevelyan in September. You will have plenty of opportunities to get to know me and my staff team when you arrive – in the meantime, you can take a look at our College staff pages to find out more about us. Your first days at University will be very exciting but they will also have their challenges, so please do come and speak to one of us if you have any questions or worries, or if you would just like to chat.

Please make sure you read our induction webpages carefully and fill in all the necessary paperwork in good time. This will ensure that your arrival is as smooth and problem-free as possible. The Undergraduate Welcome & Orientation 2021 Pre-arrival Checklist is a good way of keeping track of the things you need to do before you arrive – just keep hold of a copy and tick off actions as you complete them. If you have any questions please do contact us on or 0191 334 7001.

Finally, I just want to say a few words about the wonderful community that you are joining. Trevelyan is an exceptional community that values diversity, curiosity, and consideration. It is a supportive and inclusive environment in which you will be encouraged to be the very best you can be – through trying new things, meeting new people, and discovering new talents. I would like to encourage you to fully embrace the many opportunities that lie ahead of you – to step out of your comfort zone and truly explore without limits.

Consent Matters

All students must complete our online consent module before they arrive at Trevs, the deadline is Thursday 23rd September 2021. You can access this here.

We advise all undergraduate students complete the following tasks before they arrive in September:

  • Medical Registration - we strongly advise that all new students register with a medical practice in Durham before they arrive. This year, you can do so online
  • Additional College Charges - In addition to the residence and tuition fees, all Durham Colleges have a number of miscellaneous charges that cover other elements of your experience here at Durham:

  • The Junior Common Room (JCR) Fee - £130: The JCR is the student body that provides almost all events, societies, sports clubs and many services. The fee contributes to the day-to-day running of the JCR, and subsidises the College's societies, sports clubs and events. This is an important charge that contributes significantly towards enhancing your student experience, and you must pay it in order to take part in any JCR events, sports clubs, societies or use their facilities. This is a one-time payment that will cover your entire time here at Trevelyan. Details of how to make this payment will be distributed in September.
  • Trevelyan Library Contribution - £30 (three-year courses) or £40 (four-year courses): This is a contribution to the Trevelyan College Library, its upkeep, and resources. Details of how to make this payment will be distributed in September.
  • Gym Membership - £10 per term or £30 per year: The gym is on site and contains an excellent range of cardio equipment, free weights and more. The listed membership charge applies to JCR members only - non-JCR members can purchase gym membership for £160 per year. Details of how to make this payment will be distributed in September.
  • Academic Gown - £57: Trevelyan students wear academic gowns to formal dinners. Gowns can be purchased new for £55, or second-hand for £35 (limited stock). You can sell your gown back to the JCR at the end of your degree.
  • Bedding Pack - £35: A bedding pack is available to international students only. The pack includes 1x pillow, 1x pillowcase, 1x duvet, 1x duvet cover, 1x sheet. Home students must bring their own bedding. Details of how to make this payment will be distributed in September.
  • Platinum Pass - £80: A Platinum Pass gives you discount entry to Trevs Night and Summer Ball, two of the biggest social events in the Trevelyan Calendar. Details of how to make this payment will be distributed in September.
