Art and Culture

Throughout the year the JCR and MCR organise a series of cultural activities to facilitate intercultural exchange, including events hosted in the College and in local attractions.

Language Cafe

Each term the JCR International Representative hosts regular Language Cafes, providing opportunities for students to practice their language skills, explore different cultures and make new friends, accompanied by themed snacks.

Currently, students can join groups for five core languages:

  • French
  • German
  • Spanish
  • Italian
  • Chinese

There are student language reps at each session to assist with the learning of the languages. The organisers are hopeful and planning to add further languages in the next academic year.

For Lunar New Year, the MCR organised a calligraphy workshop in the College Bar. Participants were able to try calligraphy using traditional techniques in the informal workshop, which was facilitated by current postgraduate students.

The JCR also organise a series of events to celebrate Lunar New Year and the College host a Lunar New Year Formal Dinner in the Dining Hall.

There are also opportunities to visit Durham University's Oriental Museum on Mill Hill Lane to explore the collections and take part in an object handling workshop.
